Union, Harvard Added to Fenway Slate

by Staff Report/

The outdoor game trend continues.

Harvard and Union, originally scheduled to be played Jan. 13 at Harvard, will be moved outdoors to Boston's historic Fenway Park.

It's part of a week of games at the venue, being billed Sun Life Frozen Fenway 2012.

“It is an honor for our team to be involved in the first outdoor ECAC Hockey game at a historic venue such as Fenway Park,” Union coach Rick Bennett said. “This will be an unforgettable experience for our student-athletes, staff, and fans.”

Two seasons ago, Boston University and Boston College played the first outdoor hockey game at Fenway Park. It was followed up with this year's announcement that Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine would play two games on Jan. 7, 2012. Later, Boston College added a game against Northeastern for Jan. 14.

The next day, Jan. 15, Ohio State and Michigan will play a game in the Cleveland Indians' home, Progressive Field.

"It’s a pretty neat experience to be able to play at Fenway Park," said Union captain Nolan Julseth-White. "For those of us who went to a Red Sox game this summer, it was a great atmosphere. While we’re focusing on games this weekend, we’re really excited to take part in this event."

Union's athletic director, Jim McLaughlin, is a native of suburban Boston.

“I am excited to be able to witness our program play Harvard at a park where I have enjoyed many memorable moments throughout my life," McLaughlin said.
