Frontier/Lake Shore/Orchard Park co-op topples Salmon River for state crown

Frontier/Lake Shore/Orchard Park co-op topples Salmon River for state crown, also nabs sectional, fed titles

By Phil ShoreMarch 1, 2018

Flop is on top.

Head coach Bob Klimowicz smiled and said that had a nice ring to it.

Section VI FLOP defeated Section X Salmon River, 4-1, in the NYSPHSAA championship game played at SUNY Oswego on Feb. 11.

The win was not only sweet redemption for FLOP, which fell to Section III Skaneateles in last season’s championship game. It was historic, as the team comprised of players from Frontier, Lake Shore and Orchard Park high schools became the first-ever Section VI team to win the girls state title.

"Honestly, it’s so amazing because we worked so hard," FLOP goalie Maggie Spyche said. "Our team was so young for so many years. We grew up to be these strong girls and all of our girls are great hockey players. Being really dedicated to our team and the sport I think really helped us achieve our goal. Even losing last year, it really gave us the confidence to want to win this year."

Sophomore defenseman Brooke Becker netted two goals and Haylee Tatar scored the game-winner as FLOP’s mix of skill, team speed and relentless defense proved to be too much for Salmon River.
