Morristown-Beard girls hockey coach Bruce Driver left the locker room and headed to the bench for warmups. He watched the girls come out onto the ice, but realized one player was noticeably absent: senior goalie Gracie Meyers.
One of Meyers’ skate blades fell out of the fastenings, and she was trying to get it back in.
Driver, who won the Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 1995 and works within the Devils Grass Roots Department, leaned on his connections to try and help.
“I had noticed that the Toronto Maple Leafs equipment staff were around moving their players’ hockey bags from the practice facility a few hundred yards away into the main rink,” he said. “(Kevin Fox, who runs the Devils Grass Roots Department) was the Devils’ point person for the entire NJSIAA state tournament, so I sent him a text asking for help, to see if he could get either the Devils or Leafs equipment guys to help Gracie. I can’t tell you how incredibly kind it was for all of them to spring into action.”
