Even as COVID-19 left a ravaging mark for a second straight women’s college hockey season, forcing powerhouse Cornell, among others, to scrap its season, New York talent was front-and-center on the national stage.

After a prolific senior season with Women’s Frozen Four runner-up Northeastern, Aerin Frankel earned the 2021 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award as the top player in Division 1 women’s ice hockey, announced March 27 by the USA Hockey Foundation.

Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., native Frankel is the fourth goaltender and the third Northeastern player to win the award, joining Kendall Coyne-Schofield (2016) and Brooke Whitney (2002). Frankel was selected as the 24th Patty Kazmaier winner from a group of three finalists that included Wisconsin’s Daryl Watts and Minnesota’s Grace Zumwinkle.
