With temperatures dipping to a polar bear delightlevel, the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres briskly skated at the New York Mets’ ballfield because — among other things — that was the only way for stickhandlers to stay warm, and get two points.
As NHL standings indicated, the Rangers better warmed to the occasion with a 3-2 overtime triumph, frostbites notwithstanding. For Bettman Inc., the Winter Classic was yet another feather in Commissioner Gary’s well-filled hat.
