The Great Outdoors: Lake Placid’s Can/Am Pond Hockey Tournament

From Placid to Buffalo, Champlain to Central Park, the lure of playing outdoors transcends age, gender and ability

By Dan GuttenplanNovember 1, 2017

Skip Fryling still plays plenty of hockey at the age of 77. Perhaps his greatest thrill in the sport comes each winter when he makes his annual trip to Lake Placid, N.Y., for the Can/Am Pond Hockey Tournament.

Fryling travels from Scituate, Mass., to play with the team Gentleman’s Hockey in the 60-and-over division.

"It goes back to my youth, before there were so many rinks," Fryling said. "That’s the only hockey we had — on a pond. The setting at Lake Placid is unbelievable. Guys like myself dream about the (United States) Olympic team winning at Lake Placid in 1980. That put hockey on the map in this country, and now I get to play in the same place."
