With visions of one day competing in the National Hockey League, many players from New York and New Jersey make the decision to cross the border to the Canadian side.
Awaiting them up north is an opportunity to perform in the Ontario Hockey League, where they hope to prove to NHL scouts that they are worth being drafted and later signed.
Look no further than dynamic right wing Arthur Kaliyev. A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Kaliyev, 17, was one of only three OHL players to earn an A rating by NHL Central Scouting on its November Players to Watch List, which means he’s a candidate to be selected in the first round of the 2019 NHL draft.
After notching 48 points (31-17-48) in 68 games as a rookie with the Hamilton Bulldogs last season, he added 11 points (3-8-11) in 21 playoff contests as his club won the OHL title.
