Suffern coach Rob Schelling has nothing but high praise when describing senior defenseman Charlie Windwer.
“He’s one of the top defensemen in the state,” Schelling said. “He can play all aspects of the game.”
Whether he is playing 5-on-5, power play or penalty kill, the team captain continues to be a nightmare for opposing teams due to his combination of speed and physicality. Windwer also has a ton of experience, winning a Division 1 state title with Suffern as a sophomore in 2022 and losing in the state finals with the Mounties in 2023.
“He’s only 5-foot-9, 155 pounds, but he plays a lot bigger than that,” Schelling said. “When teams forecheck him, he is so elusive and quick that he can beat that first forechecker every time. He’s also a very strong and physical kid and has got great feet where you don’t know which way he is going to go. He’s also an intense player who is going to give everything he’s got on every shift. Suffern has had a great program and tradition for a long time, and Charlie emulates what we want in a kid on and off the ice.”
