The high school hockey season is officially underway in the Tri-State Area, and we attended two games this weekend at Sport-O-Rama in Viola, N.Y., home of two-time state champions, Suffern High School.
Suffern opened its 2021-22 campaign with a 12-1 win over fellow New York state school, Horace Greeley (Chappaqua, N.Y.). Suffern followed up that performance with a 5-1 victory against a New Jersey state school, Northern Highlands (Allendale, N.J.), in games attended by New York Hockey Journal.
It was a successful start to the year for Suffern, and to add to the excitement, long-time head coach, Rob Schelling, recorded his 457th career win, placing him atop Suffern’s all-time win’s list.
The Mounties are loaded with potential All-State Team nominees, including the dynamic senior duo of right-shot centerman Ryan Schelling and left-winger Ben Burns. Both forwards collected a mountain of points during the weekend, including a four-goal performance by Burns in the home opener against Horace Greeley.
