The American team for the Women’s World Championship that starts next week will have some New York flavor.
Aerin Frankel a goalie from Chappaqua, N.Y., and forward Hayley Scamurra of Getzville, N.Y., were two of the 23 players named to the roster by USA Hockey.
It’s the third time Frankel has been named to the Americans’ women’s worlds team. For Scamurra, it’s the fourth time she’s been added to the roster. Scamurra also played on the U.S. team that won a silver medal at the Olympics this year.
Frankel just finished her time at Northeastern, where in 2021 she won the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award as the nation’s top college player.
Joining them on the U.S. roster will be two players who spent their college years in New York.
Defender Rory Guilday, who was a first-year player at Cornell last season, is on the team. So is fellow defender Savannah Harmon, who was a first-team All-American during her four years at Clarkson.
The Americans are looking to avenge their loss to Canada in the gold-medal game in the 2021 tournament.
They open play on Aug. 25 in Denmark against Japan. They will also play Finland, Switzerland and Canada in the opening round.
